My last reflection is on Liz Diller's giant bubble. It caught my eye as I was scrolling through the talks and I was instantly intrigued.
She starts her talk by telling the audience what her studio does. They renew old architecture that has been outdated or neglected. Her most recent project was working on the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.. The museum is located in the National Mall, a very important place to the country. The problem with the Hirshhorn was that it was a big rounded donut that was being used for galleries. It was hard to mount shows in there and was named "a maimed monument and a maimed mall for a maimed collection" by the New York Times critic, Ada Louise Huxstable. The question arose, how will this building expand for a new progressive program? Where would it go? They decided the best place was the hole inside the Hirshhorn. They needed to make it different form the other monumental buildings in the mall. They are all heavy and opaque, made of stone or concrete. The answer was light, formless, free, air. The big idea was a giant airbag that expands to take the shape of the container and ooze out wherever it can. It was dubbed "the bubble" by the press. The membrane is translucent, made of silicone-coated glass fiber. It was to be inflated twice a year for one month at a time. It is held by cables to the Hirshhorn. The bubble could be used for anything: performances, films, or installations.
I found this talk very intriguing because of the irregular architecture found in it. It was very cool to see the models that they had constructed of what the inside would look like in the bubble. I saw that this was an old TED talk and was curious to see if this actually happened. Disappointingly, they had not followed through with it due to financial conflicts. If they had done it I would be thrilled to see what it looked like. Although I could not see the actual pictures, the idea was cool enough to satisfy me.
This is a unique video that caught my attention. I recommend watch it for yourself if you would like to see what the bubble was supposed to look like.
